Tips to Avoid Making Lousy Pizzas at Home

For lots of home chefs, great selfmade pizza is the non plus ultra. Getting it is a lot tougher than it seems. To have delicious pizza at home, however, it isn’t necessary to do all that much. Just pay attention to a few things, and make sure that you’re using a high quality cooking method. You will never get a great crust at 300 degrees, when all is said and done.

Try to stick to a high gluten flour, and let it rise properly, to avoid soft, bready crusts. Quick crusts, mixes that include baking powder but no yeast, and pizza crust in a can are all liable to produce a poor quality result, and it’s because of how they’re put together. If you don’t use a pretty strong flour, and give the yeast time to work, you’re going to end up getting some pretty lousy pizza. If you want a great pie, don’t take shortcuts.

Avoid inferior ingredients generally, too. The flavor will be noticable, even if you do get a bargain on low-cost cheeses and sauces. Many low-priced cheeses will not melt quite correctly, and poor quality sauces may include too many fillers, or taste too sweet. You probably already know how to tell a great pizza. It could be the quality of your ingredients that’s the at cause, if things don’t seem quite right. No pizza can be better than what you put into it, after all.

Think about what you’re trying to make, and use the correct recipe. From thin New York style pizza to crispy, cracker-like Neapolitan, heavy Chicago deep-dish, and many more, there are all types of pizza available. You’re not going to end up with anything great, if you’re using a recipe intended to make one sort, but you’re trying to produce another. Think about what you like in a pizza before you start cooking. It will help you end up with scrumptious pies, time and time again.

Bake the pizza correctly, last, but not least. Never use a low-temperature oven to make anything but a pre-baked freezer pizza, and don’t expect that to be a good one. Pizza derives its characteristic taste and texture from high baking temperatures. Does that mean you have to rig your oven to bake at 900 degrees? Not at all! Purchase a countertop pizza oven that will produce the ideal temperature and texture each and every time, or use the highest setting on your oven (ideally a gas or wood oven). These devices may take up a little space, but they’re consistent in making mouth watering pizza, and can produce excellent pizza in much faster time than conventional ovens.

You don’t have to go overboard, but it may take a little effort to make great pizza at home. You will never be stuck with lousy homemade pizza again. Just get the proper ingredients, a good recipe, and use the correct baking method!
